Healing After Emergency Gallbladder Surgery — With a Little Help from Buddy

If you’ve noticed my recent absence from the blog, I have a very good reason. On October 12, 2025, I had to undergo emergency gallbladder surgery—definitely not something I had on my calendar! One minute I was going about a normal evening, and the next I was in acute, unbearable pain that sent me straight to the hospital.

Through all of it, my loyal boxer, Buddy, was by my side. The night of my pain attack, he followed me everywhere, clearly sensing that something was wrong. Dogs are incredibly sensitive to our emotions and physical state, and Buddy’s anxious pacing and worried eyes told me he knew I was hurting. Even when I couldn’t be still, he stayed close, trying to comfort me in his own gentle way.

I spent two and a half days in the hospital, and when I came home, Buddy was overjoyed. His tail didn’t stop wagging for hours, and it felt like he knew I was finally safe. Since then, he’s been a huge part of my recovery. Every small step I’ve taken—literally—has been with him at my side.

At first, our walks were just around the house. Then we ventured into the backyard. Soon, we managed to make it two or three houses down the street and back. Now, Buddy and I are back to our favorite route at the old Hope Mills Golf Course, completing the full 1.6-mile path. Each milestone has been a victory for my body and a joy for my heart.

There’s something so healing about a dog’s love. They don’t just keep us company—they make us laugh, they nudge us to move, and they help boost our serotonin levels with their affection. Buddy has reminded me daily that recovery isn’t just about physical healing—it’s about emotional renewal, too.

So, while this recovery wasn’t planned, it’s been made so much better by my four-legged nurse. Here’s to good health, loyal pups, and the healing power of love and wagging tails.
