Keeping Your Dog Cool During The Summer Months

How to Keep Your Dog from Melting This Summer

I know we all enjoy the summer months – sunshine, backyard barbecues, and enough sweat to water your lawn. But while we can shed layers and dive into our pool, our dog is stuck rocking a permanent fur coat. Not ideal.

So how do we keep our canine from becoming a puddle of panting fur? Let’s break it down.

First, learn to spot the signs of overheating. If our pup is panting like they just ran a marathon (while doing absolutely nothing), drooling like a teething toddler, or just flopped on the floor in dramatic protest, it’s time to cool things down.

Water is a must. Fresh, clean, non-swampy water. And while our dog might find the muddy puddle behind the garage oddly delicious, stick to the good stuff. Toss in some ice cubes if you’re feeling fancy. Hydration is everything.

Walks? Yes. But not during peak “fry an egg on the sidewalk” hours. Stick to mornings and evenings when the pavement is cooler. A good test? Place your hand on the pavement. If you can’t keep it there for 7 seconds, your dog shouldn’t be walking on it either.  But, if you are determined to walk during the heat of the day (besides being a glutton for punishment!), please protect your furry friend’s paws with our dog booties.  You won’t find me walking during mid-day – I much prefer the pool!

Now for the fun part—cooling products. Think of them as your dog’s version of beach gear. Cooling mats, vests, elevated beds—they all scream, “I’m living my best chill life.” Check out my favorite cooling picks over at dogcomfortitems.com. Trust me, your dog will thank you (probably with a sloppy kiss).

And I can’t say this enough: never leave your dog in a parked car. Even with the windows cracked. Even “just for a minute.” Cars heat up faster than a toddler tantrum, and it’s just not worth the risk.

In short: shade, water, gear, and common sense. That’s your recipe for a cool, safe summer pup.
