My pet, Buddy, is a handsome, strong 6-year-old boxer who is the apple of my eye!

As I mentioned before, he came to us from an animal shelter quite by happenstance.  We were not actively looking for a new dog as our previous pet, Bear, a beagle/basset hound mix, had passed about 15 years earlier.  Bear was so special and dearly missed that we were not ready for a new pet.  And, also, I wanted to wait until I retired so that I could spend more time with a new dog.  I never liked leaving our dogs at home alone even though we do have a big backyard.  I just always hated leaving them while I worked 40+ hours a week.

Buddy was being surrendered by his previous owners because they were in their 70’s and could no longer take care of him.  He was too active for them.  The husband had begun to spend more and more time in the hospital, and the wife was away from Buddy more visiting him.

The rescue center had posted on Facebook about Buddy coming to the shelter the next day; I really am grateful that they posted early.  I am very glad that Buddy did not have to spend not even one night in a shelter because, now that I know him, he would have been so awfully sad and lonely in the shelter.  I was at the shelter’s doorstep when they opened the next morning to claim Buddy.

I found out that he had been raised by this elderly couple from birth, and that with them being elderly, he had never been to a vet; their veterinarian was nice enough to do home visits for them.  He had never been around other dogs or children.  He had led a very sheltered life.

The couple also said (we had talked to them on the phone) that Buddy prefers women.  He did take to me right away which I was very glad because, I must admit, he was quite intimidating when I first met him!  He is a lot bigger than I expected!!  It took him longer to warm up to my husband.

He was very well trained from the beginning.  He slept in his crate at night which did not last long – now he sleeps with mama!  He is easy to train, thank goodness!  He used to slobber and drool (bubbles!) while we ate, but I was able to stop him from doing that.  He made a mess!  Now, he knows that he only eats from his bowl.  He walks on his leash without pulling, and he stays with us when off of his leash.  He is a very well-mannered dog.

Well, I am going to go now and take Buddy for a walk.  I will post more about him later.

“Talk” to you soon!
